Portsmouth is intrinsically associated with the Royal Navy and has its long maritime history splendidly represented by the ships of the Historic Dockyard. Tudor nautical prowess is represented by the Mary Rose museum, which vividly displays life on board a 16th century warship. The Napoleonic era is represented by HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship, whilst Victorian engineering is represented by HMS Warrior. You can also do a harbour tour to review the modern Navy, take the ferry to Gosport to the Submarine Museum or visit the viewing deck on the Spinnaker Tower for fabulous views of the harbour and coastal defences such as the Roman/Medieval Portchester Castle and Victorian Fort Nelson (which contains the fascinating Artillery Museum).
