Staycation in Wiltshire
If you are looking for a relaxing staycation with plenty to see and do, then look no further.
We have put together an itinerary of highlights that are all within 30 minutes of The Old Rectory. There is a variety of historical and entertaining things to do whilst enjoying the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. This itinerary includes well-known sights as well as activities that only a local would know.
Day 1
A Day in Salisbury
Morning
- Visit the Cathedral, The Close and its many historic museums and buildings. The Cathedral boasts one of Europe’s tallest spires and the best-preserved original copy of the Magna Carta.
- Tour the medieval town, its shops, and the Market Square where the Charter Market is held twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
- Lunch in one of Salisbury’s many independent cafes.
Afternoon
- Take a stroll down the Town Path from Queen Elizabeth Gardens (near the centre of Salisbury) to Harnham. Enjoy breath-taking views of the cathedral over the water meadows.
- Have a drink at the Old Mill Hotel in Harnham.
Evening
Enjoy dinner at The Grosvenor Arms, Hindon
Day 2
Morning
Visit Stourhead
This National Trust property set in its 1,072 hectare estate, has a Grade 1 listed Palladian mansion, gardens and woodland. There are stunning walks around the lake.
Have lunch at the Spread Eagle Inn in the grounds of the park. You might need to book this in advance.
Afternoon
Go for a walk at Shear Water, a lake near Crockerton, which is part of the Longleat Estate. Have a cup of tea in the Tea Shop near the entrance.
Evening
Enjoy dinner at the Beckford Arms, Fonthill Gifford.
Day 3
Prehistoric monuments
Morning
Take in some history and beautiful views at Old Sarum, an ancient hill fort on the outskirts of Salisbury. An English Heritage site which is the location of Salisbury’s first cathedral.
Afternoon
Stonehenge, World Heritage Site, a prehistoric monument that is not to be missed!
Evening
Enjoy dinner at The Lamb, Hindon
Day 4
Morning
Shaftesbury & Gold Hill
Visit Gold Hill – famous location for the Hovis advert. See the amazing views of the surrounding countryside from Castle Park and the Abbey Museum and Gardens.
Quaint English town with independent shops and tea rooms.
Afternoon
Old Wardour Castle
Set in the peaceful Wiltshire countryside beside a lake, this was once one of the most daring and innovative homes in Britain. Some lovely footpaths pass this atmospheric castle.
Evening
Have a curry in one of the many curry restaurants in Shaftesbury or Warminster.

Day 5
Around Wilton
Morning
Visit Wilton House, an English country house near Wilton, which has been the country seat of the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years. Wander around the town, taking in the Romanesque Church and enjoy a cafe or pub lunch.
Afternoon
Take a walk at Langford Lakes, one of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s many green spaces in the beautiful Wylye valley.
Evening
Revisit one of your favourite restaurants from days 1-4!
